Initial disassembly of the instrument. The movement was covered with a thick film of congealed oil and dried red ink which had been spilled from the graph pen mechanism over the years. The ink was especially bad as it must have contained a corrosive element. The water meter dial was located below the pen carriage and one can see the effect it had on the meter's movement plate and dial bezel. All of the steel arbors were painted with a bluing compound originally, all of which had to be removed before work could begin.
