The old wooden base did not come with its' original dome. A replacement that would fit the old base was not possible to find. Therefore, the carved wooden stand was carefully removed from the base and re-attached to a new one with a mating dome. The stand was countersunk below the surface of the old base so the wood was removed down to bottom of the stand. then this area was soaked with warm water to loosen up the old water-based animal glue.
