Figure1.   This image depicts the area where the original suspension spring would have been. One can see what's left of the spring hanging from the bottom of the suspension spring adjusting nut. The correct length was derived by measuring where the pendulum bob should be for an ideal 1 second beating pendulum. This also corresponded to the center of a slot cut into the pendulum rod through which the escapement crutch was inserted. Small errors in the length of the spring can be corrected by adjusting the suspension nut.
